Thinking about abuse
May 5, 2016Most people find it difficult to talk about abuse even though it is not a rare experience. Often this is emotional and physical abuse and sometimes sexual. Talking and discussion, which is needed because often abuse is secret and hidden, does not fully communicate the emotions and memories that are associated by people who are abused. It is these feelings that I am trying to show in my series ‘The Happy Home.’ Home should be a safe place but sometimes it is a place of hurt as most abuse happens within families. I have used my own experiences and those of others to display these emotions. I find some of these images unsettling, even though I have fabricated, planned and executed them, but that is as it should be so that we don’t become anaesthetised to reading or hearing about abuse of any kind. Even better, we listen to people’s stories and try to support them.
